Diáfano is a young and vigorous company. Interns play an important role in the daily operations. Here at Diáfano, the interns don’t do boring work or buy any coffee. We have the opportunity to get hands-on experience related to current majors and future professions, and even represent the company and participate in different external conferences and meetings.

In my case, for example, I am the PR, Marketing & Sales Intern at Diáfano, I am also a graduate student at New York University majoring in Public Relations and Corporate Communications. It’s really exciting for me to introduce our other three interns. But first, let me briefly introduce myself.

Calvin Chen

PR, Marketing & Sales Intern

I was born in Chengdu, China, where the giant pandas live and the well-known Szechuan food is from. I went to college in Beijing for film producing, and I studied abroad in London for a year, where I majored in Advertising. I’ve been constantly exposed to different cultures and languages, which made me understand the privileges of communicating in native languages. I speak Chinese and English, and I am interested in exploring Spanish in the future.

I am very interested in music and films. My dream is to build the cultural communication bridge via these two universal languages between my home country, China, and the Western world.

One of my interesting facts: I used to be very chubby and I lost nearly 60 pounds in 2015.

For the summer in 2018, we have another three amazing interns helping us expand the business at Diáfano.

I am 20 years old and am from Queens, New York. I am an undergraduate student at the University of Buffalo. My major is Business Administration, and my concentration is Marketing, Operations and Supply Chain Management.

I previously worked at the Department of Transportation. I was doing clerical work that included organizing and filing confidential information. In the short-term, I plan to keep networking and getting a job related to sales or advertising. I’m an entrepreneur and am working on several projects. I hope to get one off the ground and make traction. I’d like to start my own company in the future.

I heard about Diáfano from Ladders for Leaders,  an initiative of the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) supported by the NYC Center for Youth Employment and the Mayor’s Fund to Advance New York City. It’s a nationally recognized program that gives high school and college students the opportunity to participate in professional summer internships with leading corporations, non-profit organizations, and government agencies in New York City. The internship is great. I’ve been learning a lot on how social media is being organized on all platforms. I’ve also done independent research on how to fully maximize tweets and posts. I believe I’ll be able to learn more on how I can help build the organic necessary for Diáfano. I’m interested and hoping to get sales experience within this internship.

I’m a sports fanatic. I really enjoy watching baseball, basketball, and mixed martial arts. However, I play baseball and basketball casually.

One of my interesting facts: I won 1st place for a case competition at Buffalo for Target.

Oscar Chong

Web Development/SEO Intern

I was born in Malaysia, but I moved to the United States at 10 years old. I’m 21 years old and I am an uprising senior student attending at The City College Of New York. I’m majoring in Computer Science.

I’m able to speak English, Malay, Mandarin, and Cantonese. To me, speaking more languages expands my horizon. I’m able to communicate with different people, learn and understand different cultures. I’m interested in learning Spanish in the future.

I’ve done another intern before as a Social Media Specialist. My short-term goals are to obtain a full-time job as a web/app developer and expand my network. My long-term life goals consist of starting my own business, travel around the world, explore and learn about other cultures.

I found out about Diáfano through a program called Ladders for Leaders, it is a program that helps students ages from 16-22 years old to find an internship. I really enjoy this internship right now. It offers a very relaxed working environment compared to other internships, and I also get a great view. This is my first internship where I’ve really used my programming skills in a real job environment and doing so makes me realize I actually like what I’m am doing.

I’m very interested in cars. On my free time, I like to either read car reviews or watch videos of cars. I also like to bowl. Bowling helps me release stress. I like to try new restaurants and different cuisines. I also have a hobby of collecting different currencies and old bills.

One of my interesting facts: This might not be impressive, but I find it pretty interesting that I am able to solve the rubik’s cube in under 50 seconds.

Mei Liu

Research & Sales Intern

I’m 16 years old and I’m from New Jersey. I’m currently a high school student, going into my junior year. I speak Chinese at home and some Chinese dialects (ex. Fuzhounese). I am interested in learning Korean or Cantonese in the future. My hobbies include drawing, reading, and playing the piano.

This is my first internship. I did community service before at some local libraries and school events. My short-term goal is to get into New York University, figure out what I should major in, and pass the SAT (with a decent number!). My long-term goal is to attain a well-paid job after graduation.

I first heard Diáfano through a program. My cousin introduced the program to me. The interview was not pressuring at all. The work place is very relaxing, so is this internship.  I’ve learned a lot more about the social media platforms we use.

One of my interesting facts: Tongue twisters? I practice tongue twisters when I am bored.

Different interns join us each semester. Thanks to these interns, not only will more students get the chance to gain real-life work experience, but they also let our young company keep a fresh and creative status. Go interns!
